Once we understand what enmeshment is, it is easy to see how prevalent it is in some Church sub-cultures.
Enmeshment can be particularly pronounced in youth and young adult ministries and communities, but these dynamics can be just as present among adult communities where a lack of boundaries or sense of self is seen as part of being a holy and good faith community.
This becomes an easy set up for spiritual abuse, abuse of conscience, and other kinds of abuse and it flies under the radar because the larger system encourages the enmeshment because there is a belief that the individual’s rights is secondary to the group identity because the group exists “for God’s Kingdom”.
